Our brief was to refurbish an existing reception space and floors four to six of a dated office building on Prescot Street, Whitechapel. On appraising the site, we identified an opportunity to create a separate, dedicated reception space for floors four to six only in a disused loading bay to the rear of the site, on Chamber Street. We believed that a reconfigured building, new entrance sequence and refined reception space would create an appealing new lettable space better suited to the area.
The prevailing loading bay ‘look’ was brought into the design with a concrete reception desk, folded metal stairs, painted concrete floors and industrial theatre lights which make use of the generous ceiling height of the existing space. We provided a greater connection to the streetscape, improved wheelchair access, dedicated cycle storage and dedicated lift access for the upper level tenants only.
Floors four to six were given a refined industrial finish. Dark soffits declutter high level services and maximise the existing floor-to-ceiling heights. Crittal-style windows were redecorated and refinished with clear solar film, whilst long linear light fittings run through the space. All three floors were leased within six months of completion.
