Matt’s constant drive is to achieve a ‘complex simplicity’ in design. He believes that even the most challenging design constraints can be overcome with clear simple thought through elegant design solutions which are practical and cost effective. He has an ability to combine the poetic with the pragmatic.
Matt established BuckleyGrayYeoman in 1997 with Richard Buckley and Fiammettta Gray. He has been responsible for many of London’s defining refurbishment projects of recent years. He has also been responsible for obtaining planning consent for many sensitive sites, often involving very complex and politically charged issues. He has lectured widely, including at both the RIBA and the House of Commons and has also chaired several of the profession’s regular discussion groups. He currently sits on the Hackney Design Review Panel and is a regular judge at architectural awards.
His recently-completed projects include: Pure Aldgate, which creates nineteen-storeys of contemporary student accommodation on London’s Commercial Road; the refurbishment of James Stirling’s Grade-II* listed No 1 Poultry; the award-winning redevelopment of The Minster Building in the City of London; The Bloomsbury Building in Fitzrovia on behalf of The Office Group; and The Passage in Victoria, which creates a new fully glazed winter garden, computer-training suite, medical centre, music room, women’s refuge centre & office space for a charity.
He is currently leading projects that include: The redevelopment of Wenlock Works, a six-storey building in Shoreditch; Technique – a dramatic re-imagination of an existing 1960’s former printworks and gin distillery into a new art-led creative hub; Eagle Wharf Road, which replaces two existing warehouses with a new building with workspaces for creative tenants on the lower four floors, and 36 new homes to the upper storeys; and Dace Road on Hackney’s Fish Island, which involves the creation of four new buildings, new public spaces and cross-site routes. One new building is a landmark commercial building, with the other three being residential buildings with commercial space at ground floor.
