The Textile Building
1 October 2014
Summer 2014 saw the completion of The Textile Building, a £30 million redevelopment of the ex-Burberry factory in Hackney. BuckleyGrayYeoman’s scheme has converted this former factory into a mix of 86 loft-style apartments and commercial space.
At the heart of the development runs an ‘internal street’, a piece of public realm that roots the building within it’s context and connects it to it’s surroundings.
A two-storey rooftop extension designed as a distinctive white rendered box with zinc detailing has created sizeable penthouse apartments.
Both sides of the development will be linked by bridges made from perforated galvanised steel, material inspired by the building’s industrial past. These bridges are also linked to covered external walkways which create the key circulation routes for the development.
The Textile Building will form part of the planned Hackney Fashion Hub quarter, a major regeneration project in London’s East End.
