Surface Design Awards finalists have been announced!
BuckleyGrayYeoman have two projects in the running. in the Retail Exterior category and The Minster Building in the Commercial Interior category.
BuckleyGrayYeoman has reconfigured 32,000ft of retail and 13,500ft of restaurants at the Newport Sandringham building, which spans the block between Newport Place and Charing Cross Road in London’s West End.
Commissioned by the building owners Shaftesbury the designs have dramatically improved the retail frontage of the building, in-filling a dark and cluttered colonnade to improve the streetscape of Charing Cross Road and enhancing Newport Court, an important pedestrian route into Chinatown.
The Newport Sandringham scheme is a brilliant opportunity to create high quality public spaces that will bring real improvements to the experience of the eastern end of Chinatown, as well as over 100 metres of retail frontage along Charing Cross Road. We have come up with a design for the retail frontages that is modern and sophisticated while retaining the cultural identity of Chinatown. Our design will help to enliven Newport Place and compliment the future public realm scheme.
The Minster Building
BuckleyGrayYeoman has undertaken a £45m dramatic repositioning of the 412,000 sq ft 1980s City icon, located in the heart of City of London’s core financial district. The Minster Building provides high quality commercial space with an emphasis on work/life balance.
The Minster Building is one of a complex of three buildings that occupy the land bounded by Mincing Lane to the west, Mark Lane to the east and Great Tower Street to the south. At the heart of the building is a dramatic, eight storey atrium, 70 metres high and 18 metres in diameter, which floods the interior with natural light. This new atrium sets the tone and material palette for the rest of the development, with curved glazing, textured jesmonite panels, marble and bronze combining to create an opulent, airy and uplifting ambiance.
