Hackney 100 Apprenticeship Scheme
19 November 2014
On 11th Nov, I was honoured to be asked to speak at the launch of the Hackney Council’s ‘Hackney 100’ apprenticeship programme, following the placement of our first apprentice, Darlington Nwosu from City Academy. The event was featured on the front page of Hackney Today.
By asking local businesses to take on apprentices, the programme aims to have a transformative effect on preparing young people for work in the future, especially those young people who do not have the social networks and opportunities to secure work placement opportunities. Unlike many other apprenticeships/work placements, each young person is paid the Living Wage.
The launch evening was very inspirational and moving! Our apprentice Darlington joined a few other apprentices to tell the guests how much he is valuing the placement… his high points so far include a pop-up shop design project (which we plan for him to pitch to the General Manager at Box Park!) and visiting our Market Place building site (see his selfie in full P.P.E.!).
Following an introduction by the Mayor of Hackney, myself and Leah Rawicz-Szczerbo from Tech City UK both said a few words to say how well our apprentices are going, to encourage more local businesses to join the programme.
…I did however overhear that CBRE were chatting with Darlington… so I might have to keep an eye on him being poached!
To have this bright & articulate young man, so keen and excited by his new experiences, is rewarding for us all at BGY – allowing us all share in his enthusiasm! We look forward to what the next 5 months will bring Darlington!
