Channing School – Performing Arts Building

21 August 2018

BuckleyGrayYeoman have completed the new Performing Arts Building (PAB) at Channing School in Highgate, London. This is the second phase of redevelopment at the school and follows on from Phase 1 of the masterplan that delivered new sports facilities and a new sixth-form teaching block completed in 2015.

The £4.7 million project provides a new state of art faculty for Music and Drama. Entirely funding by the School, the new PAB provides a 300 capacity semi-professional theatre with retractable seating for use by both drama and music departments, underpinning the schools excellence in music and reinforces the school’s ability in delivering first class teaching. The change is achieved by the clever use of full-length curtains which can quickly block out light and change the acoustic properties from music to spoken word. A tensioned-wire grid has been installed to provide safe access for the teaching of theatre technology. The PAB is available for public hire, providing a unique modern venue within a historic setting.

The PAB continues the material palette of Phase 1s Sports Hall and Sixth Form block with a dominant red brick, selected in response to the architectural context within and around the site.
