BuckleyGrayYeoman has decided to host a series of quarterly roundtable dinners, where leaders of a wide range of industries (Technology, Art, Government, Property, Design, Marketing, etc) can come together to discuss business topics. The first dinner took place in early March at the City Social, hosted by Matt Yeoman & Paul White. BuckleyGrayYeoman have been shortlisted in two categories in the 2016 New London Architecture Awards which recognises the very best new and proposed architecture, planning and development in the capital.   C Space, for client Helical Bar is a finalist in Conservation & Retrofit, while the Sport Hall & Sixth-Form Centre at Channing School has been shortlisted in the Education category. We are very pleased to announce that our very own Vanessa Lee & William Hei have been shortlisted for the 2015 AJ / Curtins Inspiring Graduate Prize. In total, 7 architecture graduates have made it through to the final round, and BuckleyGrayYeoman are the only practice to have 2 employees shortlisted.   The prize recognises Part 1 or Part 2 graduates working towards their Part 3 who have made a significant impact on an architecture practice’s business or are demonstrating good business sense on an independent project. The shortlisted candidates will present to an expert judging panel, and the winner will be announced on 20th November at the AJ120 Breakfast Club at Claridges. On 11th Nov, I was honoured to be asked to speak at the launch of the Hackney Council’s ‘Hackney 100’ apprenticeship programme, following the placement of our first apprentice, Darlington Nwosu from City Academy. The event was featured on the front page of Hackney Today.

By asking local businesses to take on apprentices, the programme aims to have a transformative effect on preparing young people for work in the future, especially those young people who do not have the social networks and opportunities to secure work placement opportunities. Unlike many other apprenticeships/work placements, each young person is paid the Living Wage.

The Action 100 Bristol to London cycle ride started the day before when six of us travelled to Bristol to take in the sights and lunched in the shadow of the suspension bridge at Clifton. The night was spent in an architectural/planning masterpiece – a hostel/night club with the loudest bass and even louder clientele… Needless to say, we didn’t sleep well – more a form of torture and experiment into the available permutations of using an undersized pillow as a pair of earmuffs. Given the circumstances, however, we were all in good spirits the next day for the brief cycle to the start line on the outskirts of Bristol. It was a chilly yet sublime Sunday morning.
